Malaysia’s cloud computing and cloud infrastructure is ready to take off and reach the next high all thanks to Amazon Web Services (AWS) officially launching a dedicated region to bring local businesses and organizations closer and faster.

Amazon Web Services Malaysia

This piece of great news is just the beginning for fellow devs, startups, SMEs, multi-nation enterprises, governments, NGOs – anyone with a need you name it, more options and flexibility when it comes to deploying applications straight from Malaysia servers and benefit from local data residency and low-latency access.

The decision is also part of AWS’s plan to invest RM29.2 billion through 2038 which aligns with Malaysia’s Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDIGITAL) and contributes to the Malaysia MADANI vision of creating a skilled, innovative, prosperous, and sustainable economy. Specifically, it also includes tons of new job creations across the data center supply chain, boosting productivity, driving digital transformation, and enhancing workforce skills in cloud computing and generative AI.

Not only that, but it also helps AWS achieve sustainability commitments more directly. Amazon matched all electricity consumed by its operations, including data centers, with 100% renewable energy, achieving this goal seven years ahead of schedule. Moving forward, Amazon will continue to enhance energy efficiency across its data centers and invest in renewable energy, including in Malaysia, to reach its net-zero carbon goal by 2040 as part of The Climate Pledge. Malaysian customers will benefit from AWS’s sustainability efforts, enabling them to decarbonize their own operations and innovate with AWS tools and services for sustainable solutions. For instance, PETRONAS, Gentari Sdn Bhd (Gentari), Amazon, and AWS will collaborate to accelerate their sustainability initiatives.

Here are some of the key organizations in various sectors  in Malaysia that innovate with AWS:

  • Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education (DPCCE) – Online learning, teaching, and examinations via cloud technology
  • Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) – Security enhancement and streamlining financial literacy through education, advisory, and debt management programs
  • Aeon Bank (M) Berhad – Seamless and secure digital banking experience
  • CTOS – Accelerate cloud migration and application deployment with security and data residency requirements via AWS Outposts
